Margaret Chen Kercher is a criminal defense attorney, community leader, and proud daughter of Taiwanese immigrants running to be the next Judge of County Court at Law #4.

The owner of the Law Office of Margaret Chen Kercher, Margaret has spent a decade defending individuals accused of felony and misdemeanor criminal offenses and handling civil cases related to criminal matters. She routinely represents clients with cases pending in County Court at Law #4, including in family violence matters and the protective order docket. She has also served as a staff attorney in the Phoenix Court, a specialty court run by County Court at Law #4 for defendants charged with prostitution, and is currently a staff attorney on the DWI Court. With a firm belief in access to justice, Margaret is committed to indigent defense, with the majority of her practice dedicated to serving individuals who cannot afford legal services on their own.

County Court at Law #4 is the only family violence designated court in Travis County. The cases that come before it represent serious allegations between intimate and non-intimate partners. Margaret is uniquely qualified to be Judge of County Court at Law #4 because she understands that change is necessary in order to ensure the timely and just resolution of these cases for every person involved. Our community deserves a qualified and compassionate criminal defense attorney with new, practical ideas to end the backlog of family violence cases and ensure fair and equitable justice under the law.

At an early age, Margaret’s parents taught her the significance of being a good role model, the value of family, and the importance of giving back to her community. She has served as a volunteer attorney with the Refugee and Immigration Center for Education (RAICES) at the Karnes Detention Center, the Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas, and as a member of the Municipal Court Judicial Review Panel. She is currently a Board Member for Austin Allies, Vice President of the Blue Action Democrats, and an Advisory Board Member of the Asian Pacific Islander Public Affairs – Austin Chapter. Margaret is also an active member in the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, Austin Young Lawyers Association, Austin Asian American-American Bar Association, Travis County Women Lawyers Association, and Greater Austin Asian Chamber of Commerce.

Raised in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land, Margaret moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas, graduating with high honors with degrees in Philosophy and Government. She then earned her law degree from the Baylor University School of Law, where she served as Notes and Comments Editor of Baylor Law School. She is the first lawyer in her family.

Margaret and her husband Ryan are college sweethearts who met as members of the University of Texas Mock Trial Association. They live with their three adorable children, Xander, Kassie, and Max, and shelter dog, Jackal, in Circle C. In her spare time Margaret enjoys spending time with her family, taking advantage of Austin’s beautiful parks and nature trails, and encouraging voter participation.
